About the event
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted on July 4, 1776. This day marks the formal separation of the thirteen American colonies from British rule.
In the 18th century, the American colonies were under British rule, and tensions began to rise due to various taxation and governance issues. The colonies were frustrated with British policies, including the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts, which imposed taxes without representation.
First Continental Congress (1774): Delegates from twelve colonies met to address grievances against the British government.
Second Continental Congress (1775): Convened after the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, this Congress took on the role of a national government.
Drafting the Declaration: Thomas Jefferson was tasked with drafting the Declaration of Independence, which articulated the colonies' desire for freedom and the principles of individual rights.
